Lab demonstration of the BB84 QKD protocol and the Michelson interferometer

Location:
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Time:
Apr 14, 2023
1:00 pm (GMT+02:00)
Audience:
Physicists and physics students
Organiser:
Stellenbosch University Department of Physics Postgraduate Committee and the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS)
Type of event:
In-person event

We illustrate the dual nature of light via two optics setups that individually highlight its quantum and wave properties – the BB84 QKD protocol and the Michelson interferometer. Applications of these technologies (secure communication and e.g. gravitational wave detection) will be strongly emphasised. This demonstration ties in nicely with the public lecture (“Developments towards a Quantum Internet”) also happening at Stellenbosch later in the day, which will also touch on applications of quantum mechanics – QKD being a prominent example.
